High School and College Scholarships

About the Project

The FOPA University Scholarship Program is aimed to promote and facilitate higher education for graduating high school students in Puerto Aventuras, Q.Roo, Mexico.

Problems to be addressed

In Mexico the lack of education is the root of its greatest problems and presents one of its greatest future challenges. Puerto Aventuras does not have a university or technical school; therefore, students must travel outside the community to continue schooling beyond high school. This fact and other school-related costs make post-secondary education prohibitive for many, if not most, poblano students. Without higher education, these students are limited not only in their level of education but also in their work options, thus contributing to the social problems present in the community and country at large.

Solution and activities

By offering scholarships for university and post-secondary education, we assist students who want to further their education to do so.Students must have lived in Puerto Aventuras for a minimum of two years to be eligible for this local program.. Students receive their scholarship monies retroactively once passing grades are submitted, and they must attend quarterly interviews to discuss their performance, struggles, and future plans.
Having run higher education programs continuously since 2003, we have seen first hand the success of the program, with graduating students obtaining better paying jobs and contributing positively to their family and community.

In the 2016-17 school year, fifteen 15 of our recipients will graduate from the scholarship program.
We currently have 11 qualifying students on a waiting list.

We cannot continue to provide scholarships without the support and donations offered by you.
